Darkness Into Light fundraising walk comes to Bundoran for the first time

Darkness Into Light, Pieta House’s suicide awareness walk, will take place in 150 locations across Ireland and all over the world this year. This unique event begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while the dawn is breaking. Last year 180,000 people woke up early to walk from the darkness into the light.

Since it began in one only venue, Phoenix Park in Dublin in 2009, Darkness Into Light has grown into becoming a global movement for suicide prevention. This year, Darkness Into Light will take place in more than 150 locations worldwide – from Athlone to Hong Kong and from Quebec to Bundoran.

It is actually the first time that Bundoran hosts the event. It will take place on Saturday 12th May at 4:15 am – starting simultaneously in all host cities. The route for the Bundoran walk was confirmed last week: it will start at Bundoran Community Centre, located right beside the Grand Central Hotel; participants will walk down Main Street, turn at Tourist Office up Promenade Road, continue around Promenade past Main Beach; then up Roguey (including reflective section) and down Tullan Strand Road to turn right at KFC; walk up Main Street via East End, turn left at Railway Bar and finish at Supervalu.

Registrations are now open. Participants must sign up before Friday 4th May in order to receive an event T-shirt. T-shirts will be delivered by post before the event. If you are looking to volunteer in the walk, you can register here too.

Starting at 4.15am and crossing the line just as dawn is breaking, Pieta House wants to bring people together as well as raise awareness on suicide. Join them next 12th of May and help bring darkness into light!
