Sun is shining, days are longer and brighter and there are lots of fun things to do and many places to see. So, why not explore Bundoran and Donegal this summer?
The first thing that comes to mind when we think of Bundoran is the beach. Facing Donegal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this Blue Flag beach is just 250 metres away from the Main Street and the Grand Central Hotel and has many amenities within walking distance.
Tullan Strand in Bundoran is a popular beach among swimmers and surfers and it is a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point. It stretches for 2 kilometres with sand dunes and an impressive backdrop of the Sligo-Leitrim Mountains.
Bundoran also has great hiking trails for the trekkers out there. One the most popular spots among hikers and visitors in general is
The Fairy Bridges. It is a beautiful set of unique cliff arches carved by the Atlantic Ocean. While you are there, take a seat on Bundoran’s own Wishing Chair. It is said that many of the town’s famous visitors over the years have sat here overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean – from poet William Allingham to golfer Christy O’Connor Jr to Viscount Enniskillen to 10 times world champion surfer Kelly Slater.
If you are more into swimming, you will be happy to learn that Bundoran boasts
two outdoor sea water swimming pools along its coastline – the Thrupenny Pool and the West End Pool (aka. Nun’s Pool). These beautiful pools are only 5 minutes away from the hotel and offer a controlled environment for a swim, as well as beautiful views of Bundoran and the ocean. Please note that these pools are both tidal so check the tides and be aware of incoming tides.
Bundoran offers a wide range of reef and beach options for all levels of surfers - not in vain it is known as the
surf capital of Ireland. Don’t worry if you don’t have experience; various local schools –
Donegal Adventure Centre,
Surf N Turf and
Bundoran Surf Co - offer surfing lessons suitable for all ages and levels. They also offer a wide range of
water and land based activities for those seeking adventure, such as kayaking, high-rope climbing, archery, zip wire, abseiling, cliff jumping and more.
All activities are performed in a unique environment in
the Wild Atlantic Way. If you decide to practise water sports you will visit not only Bundoran, but also some breath-taking nearby beaches like Rossnowlagh, where you will be instructed in surfing and bodyboarding. Or the beautiful Lough Melvin, where you will go kayaking and paddle surfing – and will fall into the water a few times.
And after a day full of adventure, nothing like returning to the comfort of
the Grand Central Hotel, in the heart of Bundoran, and recharge your batteries with a delicious meal at the
Wild Atlantic Bar. Featuring a selection of appetisers, burgers, salads, sandwiches and desserts, the
Bar Menu is perfect for those looking for a delicious hearty meal. Not to mention the yummy cocktails!
